A QUICK, PRIVATE WORKFLOW
How to convert JPG to PNG
- Choose your JPG image. Select one JPG file up to 25 MB from your device, or drop it into the converter. The file is read locally by your browser.
- Confirm PNG output. This page is set up for JPG to PNG. On lossy output, use the quality slider to balance detail and file size.
- Convert in your browser. Press Convert. The browser decodes the image and exports a new file without uploading the source to All Format Lab.
- Download your PNG. Save the generated PNG file and open it in the app or website where you need it. Keep the original until you confirm the result.
Conversion takes place in the browser after the page loads. The image is not sent to All Format Lab's servers for this operation. Your browser creates the download on your device.
Why convert JPG to PNG
A JPG may need to become PNG because a design tool, upload form, or document workflow specifically requests the PNG format. PNG also stores subsequent edits without adding another round of lossy JPEG compression. This can be useful when you are preparing an image for overlays, annotation, or repeated editing. The PNG file is a new container for the pixels your browser decoded from the JPG; it does not recreate the camera original or reverse JPEG artifacts. Retain the JPG as your source when it is the best available original.
PNG will not create transparency automatically
JPG does not contain an alpha channel, so a JPG-to-PNG conversion cannot infer which pixels should become transparent. The converted PNG will have an opaque background. If you need a transparent cutout, remove the background in an image editor or segmentation tool, then export as PNG. Merely changing the extension from .jpg to .png does not change the underlying encoding; this converter decodes the picture and writes a new PNG file. Check the extension and open the result to confirm it was converted rather than renamed.
What happens to image quality
JPEG uses lossy compression. Some fine detail may have been discarded when the JPG was first created. PNG uses lossless compression on the pixels it receives, which means the current decoded appearance can be stored without another lossy quality slider. But the old JPEG artifacts remain visible; PNG does not sharpen or restore the image. Avoid repeated JPG exports if you plan further editing. When available, start with a camera original, RAW conversion, or existing lossless source for the cleanest final PNG.
File size expectations
A PNG made from a photograph can be larger than the source JPG because PNG preserves pixel data rather than using JPEG-style lossy compression. Simple screenshots, diagrams, or flat graphics may behave differently, especially if the JPG already has artifacts. The final size depends on dimensions and image complexity. PNG is not a size-reduction step for photos. If compact web delivery is your goal, compare WEBP or another format supported by your destination. Do not judge a conversion solely by the file extension or assume a larger file is automatically better.
Where PNG is a good fit
Use PNG for a workflow that asks for PNG, for sharp text and graphics, or for a file you intend to edit without repeated lossy saves. It is also a suitable final format after you have separately created transparency. This converter keeps the image dimensions and exports in your browser, with a 25 MB limit. It does not upscale, remove a background, retouch, or rebuild missing detail. Review small text and edges at normal viewing size before using the file in a presentation, form, or website.
JPG vs PNG: what changes?
Choosing an image format changes how pixel data is encoded and what features the output can represent. The best result depends on the source, intended use, and the software that must open it. This table describes common format behavior; it is not a promise about the size of your particular download.
| Property | JPG | PNG |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | JPEG is lossy; prior artifacts remain | PNG stores decoded pixels losslessly |
| Transparency | Not supported | Supported by PNG, but conversion cannot invent transparency |
| Best fit | Photos and compact sharing | Editing, graphics, and destinations that require PNG |
| File size | Often compact for photos | Can be substantially larger for photo content |
Color profiles and encoder behavior can also affect how an image appears across apps. Use the downloaded file in its real destination before replacing a source asset. If the target does not accept this format, choose one of the other converters linked below.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG will not restore detail already lost to JPG compression. It can prevent another lossy save if you edit and export the PNG afterward.
Will the PNG background become transparent?
No. A JPG has no transparency data, so the exported PNG has an opaque background. Use an image editor to remove the background first.
Why is my PNG larger than the JPG?
PNG uses lossless compression and often needs more bytes for photographs. Size depends on pixel dimensions and image content.
Is it safe to use an online JPG to PNG converter?
This conversion runs in your browser and the site code does not upload the file. You can use the tool offline after loading the page, subject to your browser’s behavior.
